If you’ve ever added a paragraph in WordPress and thought the lines looked too cramped or too spread out, you’re not imagining it. Change Line Spacing on a Single Paragraph
Most modern WordPress themes use the block editor (also called Gutenberg), and it has a built-in line height control for individual paragraphs:
- Click on the paragraph block you want to adjust.
- Open the block settings panel on the right side of the screen. If you don’t see it, click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the editor.
- Look for the Typography section and expand it.
- Click the three-dot menu next to Typography and make sure Line height is checked so it appears as an option.
- Use the line height field to set a value. A setting of 1.5 to 1.8 is a comfortable range for body text; 1 is single-spaced and tight, while anything above 2 starts to feel loose.
This change applies only to the paragraph block you have selected, so it’s a great option when one specific block needs to stand out or when you’re fixing a paragraph that was pasted in from another source with strange spacing.
Change Line Spacing Site-Wide
If every paragraph on your site feels too tight or too loose, adjusting one block at a time isn’t practical. Instead, make the change at the theme level so it applies everywhere automatically:
- Block themes (Site Editor): Go to Appearance > Editor > Styles, choose Typography, and adjust the line height for your body text. This updates every paragraph across the site at once.
- Classic themes with a Customizer: Many themes, including Astra, include typography controls under Appearance > Customize > Typography. Look for a line height or line spacing setting for Body Text.
Site-wide changes are the better long-term fix if readability is a recurring issue, since you only have to set it once instead of adjusting every new paragraph you write.
Why Line Spacing Matters More Than It Seems
Tight line spacing is one of the most common reasons a website “feels” hard to read, even when the writing itself is clear. Visitors skim paragraphs, and cramped lines make that harder on the eyes, especially on mobile screens where lines are already shorter. A little breathing room between lines keeps people reading instead of bouncing off the page.
If you’re not sure your current spacing is working, pull up your site on your phone and read a full paragraph out loud at a normal pace. If your eyes struggle to track from the end of one line to the start of the next, it’s worth loosening things up.
