What is an IP address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number assigned to your internet connection, a bit like a mailing address for your network. When you visit a website, send an email, or stream a video, your IP address tells the other computer where to send the information back. Every device that connects to the internet uses one.
IPv4 vs IPv6: why you might see two addresses
IPv4 is the original address format, written as four numbers separated by dots (for example, 203.0.113.42). The internet grew so fast that the world effectively ran out of IPv4 addresses, so a newer format called IPv6 was created. IPv6 addresses are longer and use letters and numbers separated by colons.
Most modern networks run both at the same time, which is why the tool above may show you two different addresses. Both are yours, and both are working right now.
Why does my IPv6 address say “not detected”?
That is completely normal. Many home internet providers and business networks have not turned on IPv6 service yet. If your network only has IPv4, the IPv6 lookup simply has nothing to find. Nothing is wrong with your connection.
Public vs private IP addresses
The addresses shown above are your public IP addresses, assigned by your internet provider and visible to the websites you visit. Inside your home or office, your router also gives each device a private IP address (often starting with 192.168) that only exists on your local network. Websites never see your private addresses.
Can someone find my exact location from my IP address?
Not precisely. An IP address can usually be traced to your internet provider and a general area, often the right city or region, but not to your street address or name. Only your internet provider can connect an IP address to a specific customer, and that generally requires a legal process. That said, your IP is one piece of the puzzle advertisers and websites use to estimate where you are.

Does my IP address ever change?
Usually, yes. Most home connections use dynamic IP addresses that can change when your router restarts or after a period of time. Businesses often pay for a static IP that stays the same.
Why is my IP different on my phone?
On Wi-Fi, your phone shares your network’s public IP. On cellular data, your mobile carrier assigns a different one. Checking this page on Wi-Fi and then on cellular will usually show two different results.
Does this tool store my IP address?
